Agapé Senior History
Agapé Senior began as a single assisted living facility in West Columbia, South Carolina in 1991. Since being acquired in 1999 by our current president and CEO, Scott Middleton, Agapé Senior has grown into a statewide network of healthcare related services designed to meet the needs of our residents as well as seniors in local communities. The supporting services at Agapé Senior were born out of the realization that many senior-related service providers with whom Agapé Senior conducted business were incapable of meeting the needs and high standards of Agapé Senior on an ongoing basis. Each service that has been created under the Agapé umbrella has joined the comprehensive effort to meet the needs and exceed the expectations of our residents, patients, and the general community.
Following is a brief history of the Agapé Senior network of companies, from 1999 to present:
Agapé Senior—West Columbia:
The House, the original community houses forty Assisted Living beds. (Leased 1999, Purchased 2000)
The Vista, a unique facility of twenty-four rooms designed exclusively for the memory-impaired provides a specialized alternative to the well-established independent and assisted living areas. (Built 2000)
Agapé Villas I, comprised of fifty-two studio, one, and two bedroom apartments licensed for Assisted Living. (Purchased 2001)
Agapé Villas II, housed forty-four Independent apartments then was later converted and licensed for Assisted Living. (Purchased 2003)
Agapé Senior Rehabilitation and Nursing, originally constructed as a forty-four bed skilled facility certified for Medicare. Later it was expanded to 100 beds with separate units for Short-Term In-Patient Rehabilitation and Long-Term Comprehensive Care. (Built December 2002)
Agapé Medical Mart (Opened January 2002):
Agapé Medical Mart was established to provide medical supplies and durable medical equipment to the residents and patients of Agapé Senior. Over the years, it has expanded to provide these services to the public through three retail outlets located in West Columbia, Rock Hill, and Indian Land.
Agapé Senior—Harbison (Purchased June 2002):
Agapé Senior Harbison is located on 3.5 acres in Irmo (Northwest of Columbia) and was originally a thirty-eight bed Assisted Living facility. After Agapé Senior purchased this community, construction was completed in January 2005 for an additional thirty-one Assisted Living apartments.
Agapé Senior—Kathwood (Purchased August 2003):
Agapé Senior—Kathwood is a one hundred bed assisted living facility near the heart of the Forest Acres community of Columbia. Recent renovations include a new therapy gym and beauty salon.
Agapé Management Services (Created August 2003):
Agapé Management Services provides management and accounting services to all Agapé entities. Through the management company, we are able to provide Medicare billing support, general accounting services, IT and telecommunications services, group insurance plans, human resource oversight, corporate compliance, and budgetary accountability. Agapé Management Services is a full service management company for skilled nursing and assisted living facilities. Our plans are to continue to pursue management contracts for additional properties. Many of our senior management’s experience are also in the non-profit arena.
Agapé Pharmacy (Opened May 2004):
Agapé Pharmacy, Inc. has grown from only providing medications to the residents of the Agapé Senior communities to now having its own freestanding retail pharmacy. Located in Cayce SC, the pharmacy continues to provide medications to the residents and patients of Agapé Senior, but now is serving other senior-care facilities and is also open to the public.
Agapé Senior Foundation (Created 2004):
The Agapé Senior Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 2004 to support the ministries of Agapé Senior through education and fundraising. The foundation also provides assistance to our senior residents whose financial resources may not allow them to remain under our care.
Agapé Therapy (Created June 2004):
Agapé Therapy provides physical, speech, and occupational therapy services, both in-patient and out-patient, to the residents and patients of Agapé Senior. Out-patient therapy services are also available to the public.
Agapé Senior Rehabilitation and Nursing—Rock Hill (Management Agreement October 2004, Acquired by Agapé Senior December 2008):
Agapé Senior entered into a management agreement with this existing skilled nursing facility in October 2004. By the end of 2008, it had become Agapé Senior’s second Rehabilitation and Nursing facility. This Medicare certified facility offers Short-Term In-Patient Rehabilitation and Long-Term Comprehensive Care.
Agapé Hospice (Created November 2004):
Agapé Hospice has grown from one office serving one region of the state to now providing services throughout all of South Carolina through its seventeen statewide offices. Agapé Hospice is a ministry of Agapé Senior and specializes in care for patients facing life limiting illnesses as well as their families. Agapé Hospice also offers in-patient services through its Hospice In-Patient Suites in West Columbia, Rock Hill, and Conway. They will open their first Hospice House in Columbia in 2011 with more around the state already in the planning phase.
GMM Insurance (Opened December 2005):
Based in West Columbia, GMM Insurance serves Agapé Senior statewide in addition to being the full-service insurance agency for many residents and businesses in the Greater Columbia area. Plans are to open new offices and expand its services across the state.
Agapé Medical Service (AMS) Ambulance (Opened March 2006):
AMS Ambulance is a Medicare/Medicaid Certified ambulance company. Their team of professionals provides basic and advanced life support transports for residents and patients of Agapé Senior, other facilities, and major hospitals.
Agapé Senior Primary and Palliative Care (Opened August 2006):
Agapé Senior Primary and Palliative Care began as a primary care physician’s practice only offering services to the residents and patients of Agapé Senior. Today, its team of physicians, nurses, and nurse practitioners offer primary care services to the public at four freestanding physician offices in West Columbia, Rock Hill, Bennettsville, and Conway.
Agape Senior—Garden City (Purchased September 2006):
Agapé Senior—Garden City is an Assisted Living facility purchased in September 2006 and was Agapé’s first Assisted Living community outside of the Columbia area. The community has been expanded with new Villa apartments added and it has undergone other recent renovations.
EXIT Agapé Real Estate Services (Opened November 2006):
Part of the EXIT franchise of real estate companies, EXIT Agapé focuses on housing and real estate needs of those in the senior community and the public. Located in West Columbia, but with agents around the state, EXIT Agapé is a full-service real estate company for buyers and sellers.
Agapé Senior—Laurens (Purchased February 2007):
Agapé Senior purchased this 72-bed Assisted Living in the upstate community of Laurens. Recent improvements and renovations have occurred with more being planned.
Agapé Senior—Conway (Purchased June 2007):
This existing two building Assisted Living community was purchased and has undergone extensive renovations and expansion. This community is now one of two Agapé Senior communities that offer Assisted Living along with Rehabilitation and Nursing on the same campus.
Agapé Senior—Conway Assisted Living, Vista, and Villa, the building housing the enhanced care and the Vista memory care unit was completely renovated. The Villa Assisted Living apartments are a third all new building constructed and opened for residents.
Agapé Senior Rehabilitation and Nursing—Conway (Opened June 2009) The main building on this campus was completely renovated and licensed as a new Rehabilitation and Nursing facility. This Medicare certified facility offers Short-Term In-Patient Rehabilitation along with Long-Term Comprehensive Care.
Agapé Village (Opened September 2007):
Agapé Village is a new patio home community in West Columbia SC for independent seniors age 55 and over. Homes in this gated community are available for sale or lease and are designed to meet the needs of residents who desire to downsize to a more carefree lifestyle. One monthly regime fee covers utilities and most maintenance. A clubhouse is available for the residents to mingle and host events. This will be the first of many Agapé Senior Carefree Communities.
Agapé Senior—Lexington (Opened August 2008):
Agapé Senior’s first Assisted Living community they designed and built from the ground up. This community offers Agapé’s Villa Assisted Living apartments along with an enhanced care and Vista memory care unit.
Agapé Senior—Rock Hill (Opened December 2008):
This Assisted Living community, also designed and built from the ground up, brought Agapé Senior’s Assisted Living services to the Rock Hill area, just south of Charlotte. This community offers Assisted Living, enhanced care, and a Vista memory care unit.
24/7 Health and Fitness Center (Opened December 2009):
To promote health and fitness with their staff and the greater community, Agapé Senior opened a 24 hour, 7 day a week fitness center. Now with three locations in Columbia, West Columbia, and Indian Land, the gym offers a full array of strength training, cardiovascular equipment, and classes. All centers off a secure environment with member-only access.
Good Life Café (Opened February 2011):
Good Life Café is another example of Agapé Senior’s commitment to promoting healthy eating and lifestyles in the community. The café, open to the public, is one of the few organic, raw, and vegan restaurants in the Greater Columbia area. Good Life Café also serves fresh juices and smoothies. This very popular restaurant is already making plans for expanding into additional markets.
Agapé Health and Wellness Studio (Opened June 2011):
A unique health and wellness center located at the entrance to Sun City—Carolina Lakes serving that community’s residents and those of the Indian Land SC area just south of Charlotte. The studio is a one-stop center to help its users stay fit, active, and maintain their way of life. Services include Agapé Therapy, Agapé Medical Mart retail outlet, 24/7 Health and Fitness Center, and other services like massage therapy.
Agapé Again - Resale and Consignment (Opened September 2011):
A one-of-a-kind shopping experience, Agapé Again was opened for two reasons. One, to provide an outlet for residents of Agapé communities, their families, and local residents to consign or donate unneeded items as they downsize. Second, to privide another fundraising mechanism for the Agapé Senior Foundation. Located in West Columbia, the shop offers unique gift items and gently used household items from lamps, to jewelry.
Agapé @ Home (Opened November 2011):With the idea being as a transition to assisted living, Agapé Senior's first home care company, Agapé @ Home, offers personal care to senior adults in the privacy and comfort of their own homes. Trained caregivers provide basic assistance, personal care, light housekeeping, help running errands, or just some companionship. Also included to our clients is a weekly Life Enrichment Visit at one of our local communities. These Life Enrichment Visits allow our clients to participate in stimulating activities with their peers, enjoy a meal, and have access to other services from Agapé Senior.
